Rashis: the 12 signs of the sidereal zodiac

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, so your rashi often differs from the Western sign you already know. Each is ruled by a planet whose condition colours everything that sign touches.

How to read a rashi in Vedic astrology

A rashi describes the style through which a planet operates. Its element supplies the basic temperament, its movable, fixed or dual modality describes how it responds to change, and its ruling graha connects the sign to another part of the kundli.

The same rashi means something different as the Lagna, Moon sign or a planet's placement. Lagna establishes the house pattern and chart ruler; the Moon describes habits and emotional processing; a planet in the sign expresses its own significations through that sign's qualities.

AskShadow uses the sidereal zodiac with Lahiri ayanamsa. This can place planets one sign earlier than a familiar tropical chart. After finding a rashi, connect it with its ruling planet, the house it occupies and the exact nakshatra.
